![]() The place is well managed, good directions around, tons of food stands, bathrooms, etc for the crowd size. Lot N camping is very noisy, 1/2 the people run open frame generators all night, there is no enforcement of noise rules at all. But it's still a great weekend of racing. If you come general admission (grass seating only) is oversold these days and it makes for a packed experience. Food is 4x normal price, souvenirs are double what you get them for on the official website, and you can't bring anything in from outside. I went during the F1 weekend and camped in lot N. Wonderful people, wonderful scenery and wonderful wines and meads. While we were there, the owner of Blue Lotus stopped by for some friendly chit chat. We left with a bottle of Strawberry which is remarkable and Red Lotus that we both enjoyed. I think we will be returning frequently to have it refilled with this delicious nectar. We purchased a 64oz refillable jug of Blackberry Mead. The most unique sample we tried was the Jalapeno Mead and I'm certain that we will be purchasing several bottles of this to send to our friends from out of state. Katy suggested and raspberry mead to accompany our food and she was spot on. We tried some incredible gumbo for lunch. The day we were there a food truck was serving up some fantastic Cajun cuisine. This is our new favorite place! Not only were the grounds beautifully scenic, the tasting room comfortable and inviting, but the wines and mead were fantastic! Finding Blue Lotus Winery and dropping in to meet Katy and Allie was the best way to spend an afternoon. We are quite new to the winery and tasting scene but enjoy it very much. Increasingly, San Marcos is evolving into the center point of an emerging Austin-San Antonio metroplex. We recently found this gem driving the back roads around Seguin Texas. Those accolades certainly are tied to San Marcos’ prime location along I-35, about 30 miles south of Austin and about 40 miles north of San Antonio. One website declares San Marcos as “Austin’s next frontier,” while another lauds it as one of the most affordable places to live in the U.S. It was home to 64,776 residents as of July 2019. From 2010 to 2019, it posted a population growth of 44%. Praised as “the coolest small town in Texas,” San Marcos keeps winning fans in the form of new residents. ![]() Thanks to its status as a college town, San Marcos offers a residential mix of single-family homes and apartments. Aside from the outlet malls and Texas State, major employers include Amazon, H-E-B, Thermon, and CFAN. While many San Marcos residents commute to Austin or San Antonio for work, the city has an expanding employment base. And no description of San Marcos is complete without citing its vibrant live music scene, which helped George Strait and Stevie Ray Vaughn launch their careers. Another outstanding aspect of San Marcos is the 507-acre main campus of Texas State University, which has an enrollment of about 38,000 and employs more than 3,700 faculty and staff. Of those are the San Marcos River and other waterways where folks go tubing, boating, kayaking, and lounging. Yet to characterize San Marcos as simply a shopping mecca would mean ignoring its multitude of attributes. The suburb’s two adjacent outlet malls, comprising more than 1 million square feet of space, represent one of the top tourist attractions in Texas. Ask anyone in the Austin area what comes to mind when you mention San Marcos, and they’ll likely tell you it’s the outlet malls.
